A Route for the Bold

Most riders know the tourist circuit: Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu. But Bali's real magic lives in the hidden roads along its coast—twisting mountain passes that drop suddenly to azure cliffs, village markets where locals still outride the tourists, and beaches so quiet you'll hear nothing but wind and your engine.

The Secret Coast Loop is a three-day journey that starts in Amed's quiet fishing villages and flows south along roads most visitors never find. It's technical enough to feel alive, scenic enough to make you want to stop every five kilometers, and remote enough that you'll remember why you came to Bali in the first place.

Day One: Amed to Abang—Mountain Fire

Start before dawn in Amed. The road climbs immediately, switchbacking through rice terraces and volcanic forest. Your bike feels alive here—the engine works, the corners demand your full attention, and the air cools as you climb toward Mount Abang's foothills.

Stop at Jemeluk Bay viewpoint (around km 15). The bay is impossibly blue, rimmed with black sand and tiny fishing boats. Locals gather here for coffee and gossip. You'll find bike rental shops and vendors often set up here—explore the beach trails if you want an adrenaline boost.

The second climb starts at Abang village. This road tests your nerve: it's narrow, partially gravel in sections, and drops hard to your left. But it's thrilling. Riders who master this section feel genuinely alive.

Day Two: The Coastal Descent—Where Roads Meet Sky

From Abang, you begin the coastal descent. Forty kilometers of pure magic: ocean on your right, cliffs rising on your left, road carving between them like a scar on silk.

Stop at Tulamben (site of the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck). Divers love it; riders stop for the grilled fish at beachside warungs. The local motorcycle shops here are welcoming and can do quick fixes if needed.

Continue southwest past Bangli, then drop toward Gianyar. The road opens into agricultural landscape—strawberry fields, clove plantations, mountain villages where time moves differently. This is interior Bali, the Bali Indonesians live in. You'll hear gamelan music drifting from temples, smell incense mixing with sea salt, feel the island breathe.

Day Three: Ubud's Back Door to Seminyak

On day three, ride from Gianyar through Ubud's back roads (avoid the main town—traffic kills the vibe). Head west through Tegallalang's rice terraces, then south toward Tanah Lot. The final push to Seminyak is coastal again, but smoother, faster, giving you time to reflect on what you've seen.

End your ride at Seminyak beach as the sun sets. You've done it—you've found the hidden Bali, the one that doesn't appear in guidebooks.

Route Stats & Rider Tips

Total distance: ~180 km over 3 days (not a race—you'll stop constantly for views, food, and local conversations). Difficulty: Intermediate-to-advanced (some sections require good bike control). Best time: May-September (dry season). Fuel up in Amed and Gianyar—some mountain stretches have long gaps between gas stations.

Bike recommendation: You'll want something nimble—a 150cc to 250cc that can handle gravel and technical corners. Flexbike partner shops have excellent mid-sized bikes perfect for this route.

What to bring: Sunscreen (UV is intense), a light rain jacket (afternoon showers happen), snacks, water, and your phone for photos you'll want to share.
